Final Draft

                                                                                                                        Gigi Francis
                                                                                                                        Period 7

Norman Christopher Francis served as the president of Xavier University in Louisiana for 47 years. Francis had changed the ways others see people today.

Francis had struggled to become where he is today in many ways. Francis grew up poor and underprivileged. His parents had never even finished high school. Francis has been through a lot to get to where he is now and had to fight for what he wanted in life.

“When I was a kid, my parents couldn’t even afford a car, so my father had to ride his bike everyday to work,” Francis said.

Francis was born and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana. There was a lot of segregation going on at the time he was growing up. It was hard for him to go to school, but he always went and he hardly ever missed a day. Even when he was sick he always managed to go to school. Francis went to St. Paul High School and graduated in 1948. After he had graduated from St. Paul High he was offered a work scholarship to Xavier University in New Orleans.

"I went to Xavier and received a B.S. degree in 1952," Francis said.

Francis was the first African-American to go to Loyola University and Loyola University Law School.

"I was the first African-American to enroll at Loyola and I earned a J.D. in 1955 at Loyola Law School," Francis said.

Francis had been part of the United States Army.

"I went to the military in 1955 after I went to Xavier, I went to law school and Loyola in 1952, then three years in law school and got a law degree and then I was drafted in the army in 1955, roughly around September," Francis said.

Francis had spent two years in the army and fought in Germany. He eventually was discharged after two years.

"Xavier called and asked if I wanted to spend a few years filling a position of somebody who was retiring and I had already spent the last three years before law school at Xavier,” Francis said. “I got the call roughly 1957 two months before I was leaving the army. I had accepted the position of being in charge of the freshmen and did that for about two years."

Francis had been deciding weather to enroll at Loyola or not. He would be the only African-American there and he was already being treated unfairly.

“One day I went to a little restaurant to buy a hamburger, and I walk up the lady to order, and she told me, "I'm sorry I'm not allowed to serve you here. We are only allowed to serve you find you are white.” So I had to walk around until I found a place that would serve to African-American." Francis said.

Francis overcame all of this once he decided to enroll at Loyola and became the school's first black graduate in 1955.

“I had to make sure I knew what I was getting myself into, to be sure I was capable of going to a school where I would be the only African American.” Francis said.

He had been asked to be the vice president which was the number two position at Xavier University. After being vice president at Xavier in roughly 1968 he was offered president at Xavier University.

"I turned it down, but then I reconsidered because everyone who had graduated from Xavier thought this was an opportunity from a black person to take over the University, and so I accepted," Francis said.

“My dad was always working, he would be in his office all day and all night. But he still always tried to see us and spend time with us,” Patrick Francis said.

So he became president in 1968 for the same school he attended. When Norman Francis became the president, he was 37 years old. And when he retired in 2015 he was 84 years old, he worked at Xavier for 47 years.

“Before I was offered the job at Xavier, it had never crossed my mind to work at Xavier,” Francis said.

Before he had become president, he had never even thought about being president, or even working at Xavier. He never expected that call he got right before leaving the military.

"Reconsidering becoming president of Xavier was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I couldn't image my life if I had never reconsidered calling them back and accepting the position of president I don't know I would have done with my life," Norman Francis said.

Norman Francis has always made an impact on his children.

"Norman Francis, my dad, is one of the most inspiring person I have met, he always is doing what ever he can to help other people. When I was growing up all I wanted to be was like my dad, not about getting a good job as much, but his personality," Patrick Francis said.

Norman Francis had found a way to show all of his children that he will always help someone whenever they need it.

"My dad loves to make people happy. He worked at Xavier for 47 years and I don't think he will ever not be involved with the University, he still helps out with Xavier as Xavier helped him," Christina Francis said.

Norman Francis had dedicated his life to Xavier University of New Orleans, and if he had the chance, he wouldn’t change a thing

“My life had been full of some ups and downs, but looking back now I wouldn’t have done anything different,” Francis said.

Cellphone addiction causes accidents

Cellphone addiction is causing people to drive "blind".  Today 28 percent of involve talkingand texting on cellphones and it is growing. There are many people today who are ignoring the "no talking or texting when driving" policy. People should not be texting or talking instead they should be paying attention to the road. These people are too busy looking at there phone and they aren't looking at the road. These people are getting into accidents from not knowing what's going on in front of them.
A total of 41 states have banned texting while driving, and about one dozen ban cell phone use only by drivers under 20 years of age. About 1.3 million accidents, or 26 percent of all pileups, are blamed on drivers using cellphone. According to dailymail.com.
There are times when being on your phone is acceptable, like when you are stopped at a light to quickly check your phone or you should pull over and take a call from the side of the road. If you are driving there is an emergency the right thing to do would be to pull over and then check your phone instead of trying to look at you phone while driving.
This is becoming a major issue today because of some many teens starting to drive are wanting to be on there phone 24/7 causing people end up in accidents and crashes that could take the lives of the drivers or passengers in all the cars involved. But it's not only teens there are a lot of adults today driving while on there phone and you'd think they would know better than to be doing something that will cause deaths and injuries.
When behind the wheel you need to be very focused and being on your phone will only distract you and create problems for your driving and can cause "blindness" to the road and cars ahead of you. The most important thing about driving is always looking at the road and know what is going on and being on your phone will only cause you to lose focus and not know what is going on, being on your cellphone is taking away the most important rule of driving to you.
There is a reason that we have a policy  that you are not allowed to be on your phone when driving shown by the 1 out of  4 accidents are caused by texting and talking on your phone. What there isn't a reason for is being on your phone at all times. You have plenty of time when your not in the car. Why would you choose the time in the car to text and talk.
Most people think that the don't text and drive don't apply to them because there "better drivers than those people" but if you are texting and driving anything can happen and you can get into a wreak no matter who you are. Some people think that they will never get into a accident while on there phone but they don't realize that one of every four accidents are caused by being on there phone which could just as likely be you than anyone else.
Don't be someone who thinks this can't happen to you, cause it can. So turn your phone off and put it away when your behind the wheel.

opinion story

There are still people today are still looked at and judged by people if they are darker or wear different clothing. People should not be judged on the color of there skin and the way they dress and look.

On June 18, 2015 a police officer broke a 12 year old black girl's jaw and ribs for giving attitude to the police officer. It is not fair to the the little girl who was injured, people should not be allowed to act that way and get away with it just because they are law enforcement or any one else for that matter.

I don't think that a giving a attitude because police had her friend to the wall is a good reason to break a girls jaw and ribs. This girl is only 12 and she is still young and learning and does not need to be shoved up to a police car and hurt.

Its not only kids its adults too. In Florida a woman was tackled and punched for filming her husband's arrested. Is there a point to tackling and punching a woman for just filming a video of the cops doing there job.

It's insane to me how people can hurt and abuse these people for barely doing anything to them. They are supposed to be law enforcers and they showing people it's okay to abuse these innocent people.

But its not only them, in schools there is still a lot of kids harming other kids in there class. There is bullying at every school. It's not always about the door of skin, it's also about how kids dress and some kids can't afford fancy brands and expensive clothing like other kids. There are kids at every school that have the most expensive and fancy clothes. At Bowie, from personal experience, if you walk down the hallway you can tell that all the kids with the expensive clothing are all together and have the same clothes.

Some of these kids are the ones who are harassing the other kids who can't afford that stuff. Some kid's parents aren't as lucky to have great jobs and that is no reason that they should be making fun of them. How kids dress does not show what there personality is on the inside and all kids should never leave out or harass the kids without the name brand clothing.

I can see how people who think they are better than others can be rude sense they must have had some sort of influence at home but thats why parents these days should be helping there kids understand that we are all the same on the inside and out even if we don't look the exact same. And that even if others look or act differently if it's their skin or their clothing they still need to be treated the same as others.

I understand that darker skinned people have a "reputation" but they shouldn't, every person is different and it's wrong to for people to treat them like they are bad and criminal when there not.

I think that people should never be treated any different than everyone in the world. Everyone needs to be treated the same.

1. No, I have not brought my own textbook instead of the online. Since I have access to internet at home and anywhere on my phone so I don't need a copy of the actual textbook. And all the teachers have there textbooks online so there is no need for the actual textbooks if you have a smart phone or computer. There have been a lot of changes this year where everyone is using online textbooks.
2. No, if anything the online textbooks have helped my grades. Because I always have access to them and you go on anytime to finish homework. They can't hurt my grade since I can go on them and I don't need to worry about not having the information or miss placing my book. It helps a lot for me since I have two houses and I used to leave my book at one house and forget that I'm at the other house that night so it helps knowing that I will always have a book no matter what house I at.
3. I think this is a really good idea for the future since its so much easier for kids to go online. Since most kids will lose there books if you give it to them. The only downside would be that the kids that don't have phones and computers it would be difficult for them to use the internet.
4. Yes, I think this trend will continue a lot in United States in the upcoming years since more kids these days are getting smart phones and laptops at an earlier age based on this generation becoming more inclined to technology so kids now will start using there phones more making it easier for them to get into their textbooks online and they won't need to use the actual books.
5. I think that textbooks started to cost too much and they would run out of the books anyway. Also many kids are probably losing there books and its would be easier for everyone to just go online.

huntington story

who: Janice Jones and Tammy Rye
what: Janice shot in leg by her own gun
where: In her motor home in Beach Boulevard near Highway 1
when: 10 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 14
why: it was on accident
how: The dog knocked over the gun and it shot her in the leg.

On Wednesday October 14th Janice Jones was in her motor home when her dog, Tombo, knocked over her hand gun and it fired through her leg.

Janice blamed the accident all on her dog for accidentally knocking over the gun.

"That damn dog shot me in the leg! I was relaxing and eating my pork chops!" Janice said.

The bullet shot through her leg and almost hit the gas tank. Things could have been real bad if it had hit the gas tank. Janice was very lucky, She could have died.

"Janice should be thankful it did not hit the gas tank and she did not die." says Tammy Rye.

Janice thinks there is a reason the bullet landed inches from the gas tank. She has a theory about her near death experience.

"Since I am 53 years old, god has a plan for me, his plan is for me to at least have two more years to live. Since the bullet was two inches away from mw dying." Janice said.

Janice has no use for her dog anymore since she thinks it tried to kill her. She decided to give to the animal control officers.

"I never want to see that dog again. I am giving it away!" Janice yelled.
